LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.
Papered in postcards
A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

"Ich bin Berliner!" - Mayor Joe Quimby I feel like the only person on the planet who doesn't remember the Berlin Wall coming down 20 years ago today. I was only eight, but I remember everything from my life!! I was probably at Brownies. Seems like I was always at Brownies on November evenings. (I say evening because we would have watched it on the CTV news with Tony Parsons!) So some of you guys are a few years older than me - do you remember?
My Uncle Don (I think!) had pieces of the wall, though. That's cool. I'd like to see the actual Wall one day and go to Berlin for reals but a) I don't speak any German except for phrases I've picked up reading Nazi books, which probably isn't kosher (so many things wrong with that sentence) and b) I have absolutely no way to get there. But, it'd be cool!
Also, ironically, Katerina Witt was the guest judge on Battle of the Blades this week! Remember when she won the gold medal in the '88 Olympics and Elizabeth Manley won the silver, and put on that white cowboy hat and everyone cried? And by everyone, I mean me? I think Midori Ito won the bronze, but I do remember when she went FLYING over the boards... Ah, good times. See?! I remember all that and I was only seven.
Also amusing, Neil used to call Katerina Witt, "Zapparina Zipp!" It was hilarious! He was five and quite the figure skating fan! ;) Annnnnyway...... Now let's tear down some more walls.... Or stop building new ones, hint hint hint California-to-Texas! Also...
I don't remember the Challenger space shuttle exploding either. Current Mood: Unable to be nostalgicCurrent Music: One - U2 |

fuckwits and nutjobs--oh how I love them:P
To Whom It May Concern: I wish to lodge a complaint with the occupant of #206, 27 Henderson Ave. I have been a resident at #306 for over three years and I have never had any difficulties or conflicts with any one in the building. This changed when I recently returned from New Zealand. The occupant in #206 pounds on his ceiling (three quick forceful pounds) with the specific intent of disruption to enjoyment in my home. The occupant engages in this pattern any time a noise occurs, at random, and scheduled times. Noise to him refers to walking, placing items on the floor and cutting food for my meals. The random pounding occurs when I’m engaging in stationary activities such as watching tv, reading a book or on my computer. There have also been times he has pounded in the bedroom area during the wee hours of the morning and I have been fast asleep. I assume for these times he is “hearing” noises that he thinks are coming from my apartment. The scheduled pounding occurs at 6am on Saturdays and 7am on Sundays. I have done nothing to provoke this unreasonable and disturbing behavior. I have even taken pains to put on slippers and quiet my walking; but he persists. I consider the occupant’s behavior harassment and felt it necessary to bring it to your attention. I am aware that this occupant has had encounters with my sub-letter, Craig Wadsworth (with whom I exchanged jobs in New Zealand). Craig informed me that the occupant was aggressive. After experiencing his behavior for myself, it is obvious to me the occupant is not a rational person and thus his behavior and reactions are unpredictable. Given these reasons and being a woman who lives on her own, I do not fill safe confronting him. Due to his behavior and the feeling of unease it brings I am seriously considering looking for new accommodation. While the pounding is an auditory and psychological disturbance to me, I expect that its force and receptiveness is also taking its toll on the apartment’s ceiling. I look forward to hearing what actions you take on this manner. I understand you are somewhat bound by Ontario Law, but any efforts taken to improve my situation will be most appreciated. Sincerely, Laura Coates Current Mood: aggravated |

Apropos of nothing, he says his name is Bill I have spent portions of this week in very annoying places. First was the flu clinic, and then today, bracing gales of wind and sheets of rain a slight chill and sprinkle, I had my much put-off dentist appointment. Ugh. Such a crappy place to spend an hour of your life. While simultaneously hating and pitying my hygenists, I wonder what life choices brought them to this horrible job of putting your hands in people's mouths and scraping plaque off teeth. Shudder. Of course, I have a "thing" about people's mouths. Cess pools! I respect their bravery in the face of such grossness, but must they make my gums bleed with that deadly scraper?! However, the good news is that my dentist finally has TV's on the ceiling with the closed captioning (yay!) so I could at least distract myself with.... Rachel Ray. Ugh. For a whole hour! I now know Suzanne Somer's personal views on chemotherapy and how to make a lovely variation on a traditional pork chop dish. The bad news is that I have 5 cavities. Boo. I think it's mostly on my very back teeth because my other real doctor doesn't want me to get my wisdom teeth removed and undergo an unnecessary procedure, so I ha e to get little fillings back there. Whatever! I don't care. The needle is the only thing that hurts and that's over fast enough. PLUS, I have since been informed I can change the channel on TV, so maybe next time I can get a little Family Channel action going! Mwahahaha, my neediness knows no bounds!!! BTW, Supernatural was HIGH-larious! Oh my god. "I'm going to need a bigger mouth." And Sam's Caruso was SPOT ON, MAN! Tomorrow I will not be taken anywhere undesirable! Woo hoo! Now, how are you kids doing? I'm off to read your LJ's now! Quick Robin, to the Bat Mobile! Current Mood: SparklyCurrent Music: All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow |

Bang, bang, I shot you down. Ugh. Unbelievable. Parliament dismantled the long-gun registery today... or almost, anyway. I don't understand opposition to gun control! If you want to shoot something, just register your freaking gun! If you want to go on a psycho killing spree, this should make it a little harder! I don't know why rural Canadians get to dictate federal laws just because we have a fucked up representation system. Grrrrr! And then Maine reversed gay marriage! WTF. I don't understand people. I just don't! Also, I'm sooooooooo sick of Olympic protestors! Dudes, there's only 100 days until the Games, you're too late. Yes, we're using copious amounts of tax dollars to host a really big, fun, international sporting event, I get it, you're pissed. But when you do your stupid little marches, where you say "we're not ruling out violence," it really makes me doubt your commitment to bettering society. And take off your fucking face bandanas! If you're taking a stand against something, then show you're goddamn face, cowards. Ugh, again, I say!
Anyhoo, aside from my fury at people, I got my flu shots on Monday! I am officially inoculated against the piggy flu and the regular flu. I don't know what it's like in the States, but people are lining up in droves for the H1N1 vaccine. I mean, Canadians love to line up for things - you show us a line up and we'll stand politely in it - but the amount of people at the clinics has surprised me, since last month polls showed most people weren't going to get it. I guess with 3 kids dying, it freaked people out. Duh. The clinic was a veritable torture chamber for 5 year olds. I haven't seen that many sobbing children since the Hepititis B shots in grade six! I watched a dad literally drag his son across the room for his shot. He had the heels of his Velcro shoes dug into the carpet and was moaning, "No, noo, noooooooo!" I felt quite stalwart in comparison. Current Mood: AnnoyedCurrent Music: CBC World News Podcast |

omg I've been on T for 5 months, which means I finished my degree 5 months ago... what the hell have I been doing with my life in that time? I got up at 6.30am today to hear about a job. I didn't get it but it wasn't actually as horrific as I thought. I get miserable in winter so it's actually quite nice to be awake for more daylight hours. I mean yesterday I got up at 1pm! Hopefully this will sort my sleeping pattern out too as I'm knackered. I'm going to aim to get up early tomorrow too and go for a walk with a camera. I wrote a long post but it got deleted. I can't really be bothered writing it again. It was mostly T related stuff. I'll do it soon. |

"Thank you, Andy Rooney." - Brenna I had such a fun weekend! I was totally stressed all week because my mom was going to Calgary from Thursday to Sunday, and I get horrible separation anxiety. But since Brenna was the one staying with me, I wasn't actually worried, just mildly freaking out.
But, it was a success! On Thursday I made Brenna watch TV and she mostly complied. However, she did almost burn down the apartment while making toast, so there was a small potential for disaster. She didn't burn down the house though, so YAY! We spent a large portion of the evening looking up nostalgic clips on YouTube and crying. Fivel Mouskowitz singing Somewhere Out There can bring us to our knees!
On Friday we had to get up early because I had a stupid doctors appointment. Here's a shocker, my xrays were clear! DUH. On Friday night, Tysen came over and we ordered pizza and watched a Disney animal documentary! Woo hoo! Then we played Guitar Hero and the end of the Vancouver/Anaheim hockey game.
On Saturday we slept in because we were exhausted and Brenna gave me her cold. But eventually we got going and watched Stand By Me and cried. Oh, River Phoenix! The good die young!
Then it was time to go out! I got dressed in my Superman costume, which consisted of a red cape, a "S" decal for my coat and Christopher Reeve's face on a stick. Brenna was a feathery cat. We took the bus downtown, which is an adventure in and of itself on Halloween. I think my favourite bus costumes were the girl dressed as a Big Mac and the woman dressed as a chicken. My costume was getting looks and laughs though!
We got to the Orpheum right on time and had awesome seats. They had a costume contest before the show started and these two people dressed up as Van Gogh and a painting won, which was pretty awesome. Oh, and this woman came up to me and told me I had the best costume and gave me a chocolate from her purse! Woo hoo, I got a treat! The show was really good - silent movies are hilarious! And the VSO was great - one of the violinists was wearing a lobster costume, which was hilar.
After the show, we walked down Granville, which is crazy enough at the best of times, but it was really cool to see everyone's costumes. Some dude was a 7' Optimus Prime! (That's a Transformer, FYI.) I got major props for my costume; someone took my picture and a dude with a friend dressed as a crayon patted me on the head as he went by. I was like, "I just got patted on the head!" Bren and I then took the bus to the sane side of the bridge and went to Moxie's for a late night snack. We were both starving. At around 11:30 we took yet another bus home, took pictures of ourselves, (coming soon!) and crashed. I think I slept for 12 hours!
Now, we're going out to get a Slurped and other errandy things, then compng back to watch a movie and wait for my mom to come home! All in all, a good time was had!
I think my favourite comment last night, aside from the oft repeated "Dude, that. Is. Awesome", was a girl who walked passed me and said, "Haha! Look! It's Stephen Hawking!!!! Oh, wait..." No, but close! Maybe next year... :) Current Mood: AwesomeCurrent Music: Brenna watching MTV |
